Greene Prairie Aquafarm

About Us

Greene Prairie Aquafarm is located in west, central Alabama, about 150 miles from the Gulf coast. The farm was formed in 2001 to produce the saltwater shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei, in brackish water pumped from an underground aquifer. The brackish water has been used for the past 20 years in the production of channel catfish, but our farm is the first in Alabama dedicated to shrimp. The farm comprises 16 earthen ponds containing a total of 50 surface acres of water, but there is room to almost double the current acreage.

Greene Prairie Aquafarm is owned by H. R. (Rud) Schmittou and David Teichert-Coddington. Both Rud and David were employed by Auburn University, AL, where they worked with the Department of Fisheries and Allied Aquacultures and the International Center for Aquaculture and Aquatic Environments. Rud is a Professor Emeritus at Auburn University and continues to consult on domestic and international programs. David manages the farm where he lives with his family.

Our vision is to develop a commercial shrimp business that produces an all-natural, superior quality shrimp, that demonstrates good stewardship of our environment, is a good neighbor, and that serves as a catalyst for developing a new aquaculture industry in west Alabama.
